Course evaluations and new clubs were some of the topics for discussion at the Jan. 13 Student Government meeting.

Marcus Papin was sworn in as vice president, replacing the recently-graduated Albert Lee, who was present at this meeting to discuss online course evaluation results.

Papin later discussed the plans for the Clickers for Classrooms program.

“We’re going to teach a workshop next month on how to do Twitter with teachers,” Papin said. “I talked to two of the Deans. They think that’s a great idea for the students who might be more shy in a classroom who don’t feel like they can stand up and give their input.”

The Departments of Biology and Communication have both expressed interest in this optional program.

Two senators and two fellows were also sworn in to their respective positions during the meeting after a vote by anonymous ballot. Michelle Rose, a senior majoring in education and minoring in math, early childhood, and fine art, was one of the new senators. She spoke of the experiences she brings to the Senate.

“I’ve owned a small fine arts business for fourteen years with my husband,” Rose said. “I’ve been in administrations office for most of my life. I’m an educator. I bring a lot of commonalities and common sense.”

Rose is also interested in the vacant Director of University Affairs position.

“I think I have a lot that I can bring to that position, the board, and the students,” Rose said.

Arunjoy Banerjee, a freshman majoring in mechanical engineering, was one of the newly-appointed fellows. He spoke of his excitement to have the position.

“I’ve been here just two weeks and I’ve been selected a fellow, so I’m really excited,” Banerjee said.

The University Investors Association was the one club up for approval during the meeting. It was approved. It is designed to help students learn the market, as well as help get more internships available to students in the School of Management. The club currently has nine members.

At the end of the meeting, Director of SOPH, Marty Quertermous gave the message that he and Papin had discussed in regards to their next meeting.

“Marcus and I were talking and we decided on a goal for the Senate to come to the next meeting with three different names and three different student concerns, since it is our job to be advocating for the student body,” Quertermous said.

In other news, the pool tables in the UCEN are in the process of being re-felted at a cost of $498, which was approved by Student Government. There will be no pool stick replacements, as new pool sticks have gone missing in the past. A check-out system for pool sticks has been attempted in the past, but failed.
