Horror fans will have reason to celebrate scary movies before Halloween this year. On Oct. 29, Flint’s Masonic Temple will house the Flint Horror Con.

Event coordinator Chris Ringler says he has been interested in horror and Halloween since he was a kid.

“When I was a teenager I was able to go to a couple horror conventions in Detroit and that really sparked something in me,” Ringler said via email. “I loved the camaraderie between the fans, loved the great collectible weirdness, and loved getting a chance to interact with people whose work I knew and admired from films.”

Ringler began working with his girlfriend and some friends in early 2011 to get the show ready. He said they were all excited when he told them his idea.

“We wouldn’t have the budget that other conventions have but we had the passion, and the connections, and all of us had experience in indie art shows and other events so we thought we could pull it off,” Ringler said.

This event will include guest appearances from actors like Ken Sagoes from “A Nightmare on Elm Street 3” and “A Nightmare of Elm Street 4”, and Hal Delrich from “The Evil Dead.” Also from the Evil Dead series will be Tom Sullivan, who created props and did effects and makeup for the Evil Dead films. There will also be a variety of other guests, including April A. Taylor, an award-winning Dark Art/ Horror Fine Art photographer from Detroit, Wolfman Mac, and others. There will also be vendors present.

There will be a costume contest during the show that will award prizes like prints, books, and a painting. There will also be movies presented. The movies include “The Italian Zombie Movie Parts 1 and 2,” “Mondo Schlocko,” “Cosmos Locos,” “Project Swan,” “Heavy Mental,” “Under the Scares,” “The Lumberjack,” and “Hallowed End.”

Ringler is proud of what they’ve been able to put together.

“And through it all, we have been dedicated to one thing – making this an affordable and fun day for the students in Flint and all the many fans of horror and Halloween in this area and the surrounding region,” Ringler said.

The October 29 event will last from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Masonic Temple. The price of admission to the event is $10. There will be no lack of spooky events downtown throughout October. A free Art show, Art Fear, is planned for Oct. 14 during the October Art Walk as well as “It Came From The Kiva” movie night on Oct. 22.
