Kettering University, located down the road on the newly christened University Avenue, knows a little bit about living on campus. And from one student's perspective, UM-Flint is on the right track.
His major is Applied Mathematics and he is also an active member of the fraternity, Lambda Chi. Hamilton is positive towards the idea of the dorms, but certainly has some concerns. "I believe it (dorms) is a good place to start," said Phil Hamilton, a 20-year-old math major at Kettering. "[But] you need a rigid security structure."
Hamilton, a former dorm student, says Flint police, in addition to the university's own security personnel, keep an extra close eye on Kettering's campus after hours, something he feels UM-Flint could also benefit from.
Kettering's dorms, according to Hamilton, have the "basic necessities" - a computer lab on each floor, a lounge containing a 72-inch TV, a pool table, and concession options.
Kettering dorm students are also entitled to a meal plan, and a nearby building contains a Laundromat and a student lounge.
According to Hamilton, the influx of UM-Flint's 300 new students, in itself, won't improve the community. Rather, the activity and energy directed by the students will determine the impact on Flint life.
Hamilton said getting students involved in volunteer projects in the community, such as his own fraternity's efforts to help clean up the route for the Crim race, will help create a positive impact.
