The fifth annual Flint Film Festival is here, and whether you're an indie film buff or just looking for something to do this weekend, the annual celebration of local, national and international independent films has something for everyone.
Of the 190 submissions received from all over the world, the judging committee decided on 45 independent films to be shown in five categories; documentary, animation, short film, features and music video.
Films will be judged anonymously by both the public and private film critics. One artist will be rewarded with Avid Media Composer, a software package valued at $2,500.
The film fest is a great way for students interested in film to see where filmmakers get their start.
The independent film field encompasses artists of all ages from all over the world. An 8-year-old Grand Rapids native is this year's youngest filmmaker. His short "Dino Beat Up" will compete against 28 other short films.
Anyone interested in fields involving video or film production would benefit from meeting local and regional people working in the film industry.
Look for local producer and filmmaker John Benjamin of Anarchy Productions, or any one of the 29 of the competing filmmakers who will be at the Fest promoting their creations and talking to visitors.
For those interested in behind-the-scenes work, a live special effects makeup demonstration will be held Saturday from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.
Makeup artist Ken Hertlein who is from Hollywood, Calif., has worked on blockbuster hits such as Terminator 2 and The Mask.
The two-day event held in the RTC building on the Mott Community College Campus begins Friday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. and runs through Saturday Oct. 18 at 10 p.m.
Doors will open half an hour before the show begins to allow for seating.
Tickets can be purchased for one day or the whole weekend and showing a college ID will get students a discount price, a savings of up to $5.
