The University of Michigan-Flint's School of Management has started a partnership with the American College of Dubai. The two universities have established an academic program that will allow the students attending the American College of Dubai to complete two years of school there and then transfer their accumulated credits to UM-Flint. After completing two years at UM-Flint, the students will be able to graduate and receive a University of Michigan degree. However, this program is only one way, meaning that students from Dubai can transfer to Michigan but students from UM-Flint cannot transfer to Dubai.
This program was partially started in order to help out the American College of Dubai with its goal of transferring their students to colleges in America and Europe. UM-Flint also seems to be interested in forming unions with other colleges. Associate Provost Vahid Lotfi said, "I am delighted to see our international recruiting efforts continue to lead into formal agreements with top universities around the world. Such agreements offer tremendous opportunities for our campus to benefit from hosting students and faculty from other universities and also expand our study abroad program."
Lotfi said the program with Dubai is interesting to him. "This particular agreement is of special interest to me since I had visited the American College of Dubai (ACD) in my first international recruiting trip." This partnership will resemble study abroad programs. The only difference from a study abroad program is the degree that the Dubai students will receive and that they must apply to UM-Flint.
Provost Jack Kay said partnerships such as this are important to UM-Flint. He said, "As provost, I am pleased to see the increase in international agreements. Agreements such as the one recently signed with the American College of Dubai offer a great opportunity for our students and faculty to advance their international understanding."
This program is already in effect and the colleges are busy with recruiting students for this program. There are currently students on campus because of this program. UM-Flint is expecting to see more new students during the 2009 fall Semester.
The American College of Dubai is not the only college in a program like this. The UM-Flint campus currently participates in agreements with colleges in China, Taiwan, India and South Korea. The programs run in the same way with the exception of the college in South Korea, where the students involved only spend a year at UM-Flint. After this, the students return to their college instead of earning a University of Michigan degree.
