Britney Henry's bear would make a huge statement with its simple shirt. While some bears had bright colors or cool patterns on their custom-made shirts, Henry's bear had a simple pink ribbon design painted.
"My grandmother, who is my role model, she's a 12-year breast cancer survivor. Every time we do something that affects me as a person, I always put the breast cancer symbol on it," said Henry, a freshman and nursing major. October is also breast cancer awareness month.
Campus Activities Board provided a unique event for students on Oct. 16. Clint's Café buzzed with excitement and creativity as proud "parents" stuffed their bears and decorated shirts for their new fuzzy friends to wear.
Not all bears made statements like Henry's, but all were unique. The CAB-sponsored a Build-A-Bear like workshop only required students to show a M-card - and a little creativity.
Some bears were being created at this event to be given away to someone special on Sweetest Day, which was Oct. 18.
"I think this event is pretty cool and I'm doing it for my girlfriend for Sweetest Day." said Justin Malek, a senior and engineering major.
Build-a-Bear wasn't the only event CAB sponsored to help students celebrate Sweetest Day. The organization also brought in two comedians for a "Comedy Showcase" on Oct. 17.
It didn't take long for Bryan McCree and Roy Wood Jr. to have students laughing. It didn't take long for McCree in particular, a Flint native, to have students laughing at the misgivings associated with Flint. He also talked about his diverse life. During his routine, the atmosphere was very casual, and McCree interacted with the audience.
"It's a pleasure to be here at my home university and what I offer, what I hope to bring here tonight is to share my diverse lifestyle with people," McCree said.
Following McCree was Wood. He connected with students right away on the subject of school. He too spoke on diversity and race and wasn't afraid to hit on any topic. CAB's creative ideas for Sweetest Day were enjoyed by students as well as faculty.
"I think it's really cool," said Tiffany Lind, an elementary education major and sophomore. "It's a good way to bring me and my friends together, and it's a great gift for Sweetest Day."
