In less than a week, Student Government teamed up with 19 organizations to hold the UM-Flint Haitian Relief Benefit Brunch and raise money for the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti. Students from all areas came together and ate scones, eggs, hash browns, sausage and turkey bacon. The minimum donation was $5 for all you could eat.

“The Haiti benefit brunch had a magnificent turnout, and raised $2,000 and counting from students,” SG President Owen Agho said. SG will match students’ donations and issue a check to UNICEF. As of press time, a total of $4,050 will be donated.

Over 50 people from clubs and organizations arrived at 5:45 a.m., even earlier than the actual brunch, to appear on ABC12 and get the word out about the brunch. Agho said this isn’t the first time SG has teamed up with other organizations to put on a large event, and that the Student Organization Partnership Board, or SOP board, has already been organizing events like the brunch to get organizations working together and talking to other counterparts on other U-M campuses. Derwin Munroe, chair of the political science department, spoke at the brunch about the situation in Haiti and their history, and answered student questions.

“People are still being found in the rubble and there needs to be a system of delivering relief to the people,” Munroe said.

“Technically the Haitians are our people because they’re so close to us. They’re our neighbors and we let them live like a third world country,” Amanda Berry, sophomore biology major, said. The organizations that came together to sponsor this event included: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Arab Student Association, Campus Activities Board (CAB), Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Genesee Early College, Greek Council, International Student Organization (ISO), Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Muslim Students’ Association, People Helping People, Phi Sigma Sigma Sorority, Sorority Interest Group, Student Advertising Network, Student Athletic Association, Students Moving the UCEN Forward (SMUF), Theta Chi Fraternity and Theta Phi Alpha Sorority.
