The Flint Generals put on an amazing show Sunday afternoon in a game against defending IHL champs the Fort Wayne Komets. Fans were entertained with a last-second goal by Joel Gasper at the end of the second period to tie it 5-5 and the third period featured goaltender Chad Alban skating out of his net to the aid of a fellow General in a fight to the delight of the fans that filled Perani Arena and Event Center. Meanwhile, the UM-Flint Club Hockey team sat in their locker room, getting ready to take on the Generals in a shootout after the game. The players were dressed in full gear and ready for some fun against a team of professionals. Chad Cross and Mike Schunot sat at their lockers, joking with their teammates about what would happen if the Generals and Komets ended up in a shootout for the game that was already in play. Their words were prophetic, and the Generals would be in a shootout with the Komets only minutes later, eventually losing 5-6. The UM-Flint team walked the long walkway from their locker room to the entrance to the ice behind one of the goals, with little kids standing in awe of them. Despite the weather, many of the fans who came to watch the game opted to stay in their seats, or even move closer, to witness a battle of Flint’s finest on the ice. The shootout consisted of ten players from the Generals and ten from the UM-Flint team. Frank Tyra took the first five shots, with Kirk Allen taking the last five. Mike Schunot hit the post against Flint Generals backup goaltender Adam Drekker, who stopped nine attempts from the UM-Flint team. Schunot later expressed his thoughts on a possible rematch next year. "That’d be great if it was. I think that next year we’d do better than this year," he said. "Obviously nerves were a factor for us today." Goalie Kirk Allen said it was a great experience. "I was impressed with a lot of the shots. I worked on a lot of stuff this season that helped me out throughout the shootout."
